Early Preview of NetEnt’s New Finn and the Swirly Spin Slot
Just as the dust settles on the latest NetEnt game release, it’s time to start preparing for the launch of the next – Finn and the Swirly Spin. It’s but a couple of weeks since Planet of the Apes hit the best online casinos. Since when, it’s appeared in a host of bonus promotions and quickly established itself as one of the most popular new games of recent years. You get the impression that Planet of the Apes was intended to be the NetEnt’s blockbuster release of 2017. So, how can they follow it up? By getting their creative hats back on and coming up with something entirely original again, that’s how.
Finn and the Swirly Spin Overview
Indeed, just what have they putting in the tea over at NetEnt headquarters? Not that I’m suggesting it’s anything too dodgy, but the design – already recognised for their innovation and creativity – seem to have stepped it up a notch this year – and their newest online slots prove the point. Planet of the Apes boasted a unique ‘two games in one’ format that we hadn’t seen before. And now Finn and the Swirly Spin is equally distinctive and quirky.
We’d been wondering what the ‘Swirly Spin’ element of the title would mean. Well, thanks to the release of the first footage of the game, we know. The five minute YouTube video showcases a brand new spin format. The symbols don’t spin and settle on the reels as per traditional slot games. Rather, they move in a ‘swirl’ that’s reminiscent of a snail’s shell. The pattern starts in the bottom left corner. Symbols that form winning lines are removed, and the rest of the grid moves round as a result.
The Key Symbol and the Land of Free Spins
The swirly spins aren’t just an unconventional, interesting gimmick either. They contribute towards Finn and the Swirly Spin’s humongous core feature, which features no less than four free spins rounds. It works like this. You’ll notice that a ‘key’ symbol sits in the first spot of the spiral at the beginning of each spin. If that key symbol makes it all the way to the centre of the grid via a series of wins, then it all gets very interesting.
Firstly, the game’s central character, an Irish leprechaun called Finn takes off to the skies, slowly floating through fluffy clouds until a new land appears on the horizon. This psychedelic experience for Finn lands you in a magical place called the Land of Free Spins. Here you get you can move around four different locations, each offering a different free spins rounds.
Four Different Free Spins Rounds
The more times you shift that all important key symbol to the centre of the grid during the main game, the more venues you’ll unlock in the Land of Free Spins. The four venues each house a different free spins round with unique features. Just to prove the old adage that there’s an Irish Pub everywhere you go in the world, there’s even one on top of the cloud in Finn and the Swirly Spin too. Each of the venues includes a random feature too.
The first game takes place in the Star Bar though and appears to feature the cute star wild symbol heavily. Three wilds appear randomly with each spin to help you drop those coins. There’s a dragon destroy feature which removes random symbols to precipitate another swirl in the 2nd Lava Lair venue. The Irish Luck random transforms a vertical or horizontal line into matching symbols in the Lucky Mug (that’s the Irish Pub). Then, the fourth venue – the Golden Pot – uses a Magic Transform feature to turn low paying symbols into high paying ones.
Playability, Visuals and Variance
The Land of Free Spins is going to get tongues wagging. But from first appearances, this looks like an immensely enjoyable all round slot too. We’ve become accustomed to great visuals from NetEnt over the years, but this looks beautiful even by their standards. It’s fast paced, bright and detailed, while the swirls work so well that you wonder why nobody has thought to use the technique before. All in all, Finn and the Swirly Spin looks set to offer a fun theme, great aesthetics, a unique games grid and stellar special features. It’s not a bad mix.
At first glance, it would appear that Finn and the Swirly Spin will suit all playing styles too. You can win by matching symbols vertically, horizontally and in clusters in the main game. Although the ‘swirl’ shape is marked out by clearly delineated lines, symbols that are adjacent to each other across these lines will still trigger a win. That will suit players who favour regular small wins. But those of you who prefer high variance slots can get your kicks from the free spins round as well.
